Herbalism

Herbalism is a naturopathic treatment of using herbs to treat a number of different ailments and to prevent diseases. Herbalists prefer to use the entirety of the herb, meaning that they use the flowers, leaves, roots or bark. They also use various parts of plants for their aromatic properties, which means that these particular parts will be used for their fragrance whether in perfume or other uses. They also use herbs to season foods in order to enhance their goodness.Using herbal medicine isn't a modern invention. There is evidence that proves that herbs were used for medicinal purposes by the ancient Chinese people along with other cultures such as Egyptians and Native Americans.

Herbal medicine can be used in many different ways, however, water-based concoctions are popular and can include the following:

Infusions this means that steeped herbs are boiled in water Syrups a thick liquid containing the herbs

Poultices these are cloths that are wrapped in damp herbs to be used on a specific area of the body

Decoction this is similar to infusion, however, the harder parts of the plant material are kept and used rather than breaking it down first

Lotions these are smooth liquids made from the infusions or decoctions Baths that have the herbs laced into the water
Pessaries and suppositories

As previously discussed, discovering and treating the underlying cause of an illness is one of the fundamental principles of naturopathy.

Herbal medicine can be used to treat a number of conditions including, but not limited to:

Allergies

Asthma

Arthritis

Fatigue

Digestive disorders such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

In recent times, there has been a growing interest in herbal medicine as more and more people are turning from traditional medicine in favour of alternative, natural treatments. This is despite the advancements in modern technology, and the demand for herbal supplements is continuing to rise. As mentioned before, when meeting with a herbalist or if you yourself are thinking of specialising in this area of naturopathy it is vitally important to disclose which, if any, pharmaceutical medicines are being taken. This is because while the herbs are safe, some can have adverse effects on health when mixed with other medicines.

The following are some of the most popular herbal medicines, as well as their benefits, and also some relevant safety information for taking them.

Echinacea

This is a flowering plant that is used to treat wounds and burns. It can also be effective in relieving the discomfort of a toothache or sore throat. It is usually taken as a tea or supplement and is also used to treat a common cold. It is generally regarded as safe to be taken, however, there has been evidence of side effects occurring such as nausea and stomach pain.

Ginseng

The roots of this plant are frequently used in Chinese medicine to reduce inflammation and to help increase energy levels. It is usually taken as a tea, or if dried, as a powder. Again, it is generally regarded as safe, however, potential side effects include headaches, trouble sleeping and problems with digestion.

Ginkgo biloba

The seeds and leaves of this are used to make teas, however, the leaf extract is also commonly used. It can be used to treat a vast range of conditions such as dementia, mental health disorders and heart disease, however, there is a lack of evidence to support this. Side effects include heart palpitations, headaches and skin reactions.

Elderberry

This plant has long been used to treat symptoms of headaches, toothache and constipation. However, it is primarily used to treat the common cold and flu. The raw fruit is toxic; however, it is safe to use in the form of a remedy. Potential side effects include nausea and vomiting.

Turmeric

This is a herb that belongs to the same family as ginger. Its major compound, curcumin, can be used to treat a number of conditions including inflammation, and anxiety. Both turmeric and curcumin supplements are considered safe to use, however taking high doses has the potential to result in headaches or diarrhoea.

Chamomile

This flowering plant is one of the most widely used herbal supplements. It is commonly made into a tea and used as a remedy for nausea, constipation, stomach pain and urinary tract infections. It is considered safe to use, with the exception of those who have allergies to similar types of plants. These people should consult a herbalist before taking it.
